Tutorial 02: Angie Harmon

FROM TO OR

STEP 1:

I took this picture, cropped out what I wanted to use, then resized it to 100x100.

STEP 2:
Duplicate the base and set it to Hard Light at 53% opacity.

STEP 3:
I duplicated the base again, brought it to the top, and made it into another Hard Light layer at 59%. This isn't necessary. I could have simply adjusted my first Hard Light layer until it was how I wanted it and left it at that, but this allowed me to mess around with it a little more after I added the color layers to make it just right.

Just like that, it looks like too much hard light. But after adding the color layers, it works.

STEP 4:
Add a new layer and fill it with #c18e57 . Set it to Exclusion, 100%.

The color looks good like that. It's my personal favorite of the two outcomes. But...

STEP 5:
Add another new layer and fill it with #c18e57 to make the skin more tan. Set it to Soft Light, 100%.

You get this:

I don't like it, it's icky, too orangish-brown. It looks like a fake tan. So, I move the Soft Light layer (tan) below the Exclusion layer (blue) and it looks much better.

STEP 6:
Next, I took the same color I used for the Exclusion layer (#c18e57) and set it as my Foreground color. I used white for the Background color.

Select the rectangle tool and put the settings like this (mode and width are the most important):

STEP 7:
Draw a rectangle from the top to the bottom of the icon, keep it thin. Make sure it has its own layer (at the top).

Set the rectangle layer to Screen at 30% opacity, or however light you want it.

STEP 8:

I added text ("angie harmon") in white with the font Carpenter ICG, size 8. It's not legible unless you already know what it says, but I like the way it looks.

That's it.
